It all depends on how concerned you are with plankton levels.
When I first set up my tank I ran uv for a couple of years. I have taken it off and haven't looked back. But it is nice to know that if I ever have an ich outbreak I can whip it out and hook it back up. There are pros and cons to both sides of the uv issue. It mainly comes down to personal preference.

Also good to run when suffering algae outbreaks. Not a complete solution but will help while other parameters can be brought back in check.

So is there a switch to turn it off and on? I have thought about having one too.

Another good topic. But I'm no expert on uv.

I don't know for sure. I would guess around 20-30 watts.

I Have mine on a digital timer. I have a 25W uv. the Wattage output isn't as important as the flow that it receives.

Very true. The important factors are how much flow it receives and the design/construction of the housing to maximize exposure time.

So you want it to move slower thru the UV? Also where is the best place to plumb it in the system?I figure smaller holes for the water to enter from means slower rate. Or is this wrong?
