i am sure happy that I found this forum. Just reading the post I can tell I will learn alot and be here for a long time. I have a 72 Gal bowfront 40lb live rock, skimmer, 4" coral bed ( I am strting to think sand would have been better) 260W PC lighting. I have had it setup for about two months and I just got my first corals. Some I do not know what they are and a nice candy cane frag. I told the LFS what my setup was and he collected a bunch of frags for me and only charged me $25. Nice deal I thought. Well I just wanted to say hi all.:D

Hi Grouper and welcome. By saying you have a coral bed, I am assuming that you mean crushed coral? If so, some say that they are nitrate traps as they trap detritus and propagate nitrates. I have some CC in my tank but the majority is sand. I use the CC as a calcium buffer.

Depending on the corals you are keeping, nitrates might not be an issue. Inverts, on the other hand, don't like high nitrates.

Good luck and keep us posted on the status of your tank.
