collecting for reef tank

I couldn't find the dumb question forum so this forum was my next best guess. A couple years ago my wife's son collected a number of blue legged crabs off the coast of South Carolina and put them in his reef tank.

The tiny crabs in shells lasted for at least a year. Nothing died in the tank from the introduction. I wanted to know if others have collected for their reef tanks, where they collected, offshore or scuba diving, and if it is legal.

The best!
